Wolves U14s do battle at Charleville
The Stanley River Wolves U14 boys gave their all as they took part in the Adrian Vowles Cup junior rugby league carnival in Charleville last Friday and Saturday.
The Wolves held their heads high after competing in five matches across the two days, despite not achieving a win, while there were concerns about the flood situation back home.
Seventeen Wolves players took part, including four U13s.
Stanley River began its campaign with an 8-all draw against the Western Dragons, before going down 16-0 to Redlands.
The following day, the Wolves also went down 16-0 to Redcliffe before going down 12-0 to Souths and Roma Saints.
Hamish Hutchinson was named best-and-fairest for Stanley River.
Team manager Cindy Cooper said it would be an understatement to say she was super proud of all the Stanley River players who made the trip to Charleville, and that all of them showed great sportsmanship and deserved the best-and-fairest award.
“The scoreboard really didn’t reflect on how they all played, considering they only had a few training sessions so far this year,” she said.
“They made heaps of new friends and had an awesome time bonding before the session started.
“Their two coaches Deece Knight and James Cochran (who are only young themselves) are not only great coaches but great role models. Deece has been coaching them since they were in U8s and James came on board last year.
“We may have been stuck out there for an extra night due to flooding but we definitely made the most of it.”
Cindy Cooper offered big thanks to motel owner Gary Cooper, who “put us up free of charge for the extra night”.
“Not only did the boys have fun but so did their parents. Definitely a carnival to put on everyone’s to-do list,” she said.
For the record, other U14 teams which took part were Benderoo Mitchell, Brothers, Carnarvon Cubs, Central Highlands, Central West, Dalby, Fassifern, Pittsworth, South Burnett, and Toowoomba Valleys (Black and Red teams).
Redlands and Toowoomba Valleys Red won their five round-robin games each, with Redlands scoring 68 points and conceding four while the Toowoomba team scored 56 points and did not concede even a single point.
The two unbeaten teams subsequently faced off in the final, with the Toowoomba team winning 8-4.
