Victim Assistance Wait Times Slashed

Application wait times for victim assistance have more than halved in the past three years, with Victim Assist Queensland (VAQ) now processing new applications in an average of 5.5 months—down from 14.5 months in 2021-22.

Urgent applications, including those for domestic and family violence victims, are now being decided in an average of 24 days, compared to 49 days last year. Payments to primary victims are also being processed faster, with wait times reduced from 122 days to 71 days.

The improvements are the result of streamlined assessment processes, additional staff, and upgraded systems. VAQ has also trialled faster payments for eligible victims while full assessments are completed.

The Queensland Government recently increased financial assistance for victims, including those affected by domestic and family violence, and announced a $200 million package to further boost victim support services.
