$11M boost for language education

The Federal Government is investing $11 million in grants to enhance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language education in primary schools, as part of its commitment to Closing the Gap.

More than 40 communities across Australia will benefit from 26 projects under the First Nations Languages Education Program, which fosters community-driven collaborations to teach and sustain local languages.

The initiative acknowledges that each community has unique aspirations and needs for preserving and teaching First Nations languages. Over the course of two years, the program will support the development of more than 100 trainee language educators and establish partnerships with over 70 schools.

This program has been created in collaboration with First Languages Australia (FLA), the national peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages. Federal Minister for Education, Jason Clare, emphasized the importance of safeguarding and strengthening local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages within communities.
