Sunshine Coast Public Homebirth Service Set to Begin

A new publicly funded homebirth service will soon launch on the Sunshine Coast, with expectant mothers now able to express their interest in the program.

A new publicly funded homebirth service will soon launch on the Sunshine Coast, with expectant mothers now able to express their interest in the program.

Announced by the Miles Government in November, the service will be available to women who meet clinical criteria and live within a safe travel distance to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. A team of obstetricians, midwives, medical staff, Queensland Ambulance Service representatives, and maternity patients have been working to ensure a safe and well-supported rollout.

Frontline health staff have been preparing through simulations designed to enhance patient safety during homebirths. Expressions of interest for the program recently opened, with the service expected to commence in the second half of 2024.

Eligible women can discuss the option with their GP or contact the Sunshine Coast Health team via email. The initiative is part of a broader push to expand maternity care choices for Queensland families.
