State appoints local government red tape reduction taskforce lead

The Crisafulli government has appointed Andrew Chesterman to lead the Local Government Red Tape Reduction Taskforce, fulfilling a commitment from its 100 Day Plan.

The Crisafulli government has appointed Andrew Chesterman to lead the Local Government Red Tape Reduction Taskforce, fulfilling a commitment from its 100 Day Plan.

The taskforce will work with councils across Queensland to identify ways to streamline approvals and reduce regulatory barriers, allowing local governments to deliver projects more efficiently. A report with its findings will be submitted to the government by 30 June 2025.

Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said Mr Chesterman’s experience made him well-suited to the role.

“Andrew Chesterman has hit the ground running, bringing over 30 years of experience in state and local government,” Ms Leahy said.

“Reducing red tape will help councils deliver infrastructure and services more effectively for their communities.”

Mr Chesterman said he was eager to engage with local governments and stakeholders.

“Local councils know their communities best, and I look forward to working with them to ensure regulation serves their needs,” he said.

Local Government Association of Queensland CEO Alison Smith welcomed the appointment, saying councils had long called for regulatory changes.

“Queensland councils have repeatedly sought red tape reduction, and we look forward to this review delivering real solutions,” Ms Smith said.
