Queensland students rewarded for consumer savvy

Queensland students and schools have shared in more than $15,000 in prize money after demonstrating strong consumer and financial literacy skills in the annual Buy Smart Competition.

Queensland students and schools have shared in more than $15,000 in prize money after demonstrating strong consumer and financial literacy skills in the annual Buy Smart Competition.

Run by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), the competition helps young Queenslanders develop skills in budgeting, online shopping, scams, and financial decision-making.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Deb Frecklington presented the awards at Parliament House, highlighting the importance of financial education.

“The way we use money has changed significantly, so teaching kids about how to manage it wisely is more important than ever,” she said.

“More than 8,000 young Queenslanders—from the Torres Strait to the Gold Coast and out west to St George—took part in the program this year.”

Among the winners were St Dympna’s Primary School students Meredith and Ruby, whose talk show-style entry explored shrinkflation and encouraged viewers to consider unit pricing. Other creative entries included a song about scams, a stop-motion film on buying a first car, and a choose-your-own-adventure book on online shopping.

Carinity Education Southside, an alternative school for vulnerable girls, was named School Champion, receiving $1,500 for its commitment to consumer literacy education.

The full list of winners is available on the OFT website.
