Queensland Sees 1% Drop in Reported Crime, Youth Offending Decreases
Queensland has recorded a 1% decrease in reported crime between July 2023 and March 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to new data from the Queensland Police Service (QPS).
Queensland has recorded a 1% decrease in reported crime between July 2023 and March 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to new data from the Queensland Police Service (QPS). The reduction is attributed to high visibility policing and collaborative efforts between agencies focused on crime prevention and intervention.
Notable declines include unlawful entry offences, down 9%, and vehicle theft, which decreased by 2%. Youth offending also showed positive results, with overall offences committed by young people dropping 10.7% in the first quarter of 2024. Property crimes by youth offenders fell by 7.8%, while offences against the person decreased by 14.2%.
The QPS attributes these improvements to targeted operations like Operation Victor Unison, which has led to over 12,000 arrests since March 2023, and Taskforce Guardian, focusing on repeat youth offenders.
Despite these gains, the Queensland Crime Report highlights an increase in domestic and family violence offences, including assault and stalking. The State Government has recently passed new laws to tackle domestic violence, including criminalising coercive control, to better support victims and hold offenders accountable.
