Queensland Government launches 'Making Healthy Happen 2032' to tackle obesity
The Queensland Government has unveiled Making Healthy Happen 2032, a state-wide strategy aimed at preventing, reducing, and treating obesity and its contributing factors.
The Queensland Government has unveiled Making Healthy Happen 2032, a state-wide strategy aimed at preventing, reducing, and treating obesity and its contributing factors.
The initiative, developed by Health and Wellbeing Queensland in partnership with 10 government departments, industry, and community organisations, focuses on making it easier for Queenslanders to make healthier food and lifestyle choices.
The strategy includes an immediate action plan with several key areas of focus. These include supporting national initiatives to improve the nutritional quality of processed foods, promoting healthy food and drink strategies across healthcare, schools, sports facilities, and workplaces, and delivering targeted campaigns to encourage positive food culture, particularly among families, youth, and school-aged children.
In addition, Making Healthy Happen 2032 aims to improve access to prevention programs and simplify the referral process for Queenslanders seeking resources to support their health.
This strategy is the first in Australia to align with the National Obesity Strategy 2022-2032, marking a significant step forward in addressing the state's obesity challenge.
Premier Steven Miles, who spearheaded the creation of Health and Wellbeing Queensland, emphasised the importance of the initiative: “We want to make it easier for Queenslanders to prevent and reduce obesity,” he said.
Minister for Health, Shannon Fentiman, highlighted the strategy’s role in addressing obesity while protecting the future health of Queensland’s population. “This plan will help stop the development of chronic diseases through prevention,” she said.
The strategy also aims to create healthier environments for Queenslanders, ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to lead healthier lives.
