Queensland Councils Secure $13 Million for Waste Initiatives
Twenty-six Queensland councils will share in more than $13 million under the state government’s Let’s Get It Sorted Partnership Program to support waste reduction, recycling, and reusing initiatives.
Twenty-six Queensland councils will share in more than $13 million under the state government’s Let’s Get It Sorted Partnership Program to support waste reduction, recycling, and reusing initiatives.
Environment and Tourism Minister Andrew Powell announced the program while inspecting the new Sunshine Coast Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Nambour for National Recycling Week.
The first round of funding, totalling $7.15 million, will assist councils and two Regional Organisations of Councils in boosting recycling rates, tackling litter, and improving waste education.
Funded through Queensland’s waste levy, the program is part of the government’s plan to establish a zero-waste society by 2050.
Minister Powell urged Queenslanders to recycle properly, saying, “Avoiding waste, reusing, and recycling creates green jobs, conserves resources, and protects our environment.”
Sunshine Coast Council’s Cr Tim Burns welcomed the funding, highlighting its role in enhancing waste education and fostering a more sustainable community.
