Motorists are being warned to expect a heightened police presence on Queensland roads throughout the winter school holidays, with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) officially launching its road safety initiative, Operation Cold Snap, from midnight tonight until Sunday, July 7.
The operation is designed to disrupt dangerous driving behaviours, including speeding, fatigue, seatbelt violations, driver distraction, impaired driving, and vehicle safety standards.
Both visible and covert patrols, static roadside testing, and a zero-tolerance policy will be employed to ensure motorists adopt safer driving practices. The initiative comes as Queensland experiences a concerning rise in fatalities, with 132 people having lost their lives on the state’s roads by June 18—many due to dangerous driving.
Focus on Motorcyclists and Holiday Traffic
Motorcyclists will be a key focus during Operation Cold Snap, with fatalities this year already at 36, a significant 19.2% increase over the past five years. With the winter school holidays traditionally being a busy period on Queensland roads, the QPS urges all road users, including holidaymakers and families, to take extra care to ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.
