Ninety-four new police officers were sworn into the Queensland Police Service (QPS) today, bringing diverse skills and experience to the force.
The recruits come from a wide range of backgrounds, including emergency services, psychology, criminology, nursing, construction, sport, and even baking. Among them are former helicopter pilots, baristas, dental technicians, and veterinary nurses.
With record numbers applying to join the QPS, an additional intake of recruits will commence in August 2024, bringing the total number in training to approximately 800—the highest in Queensland history.
This intake is part of the QPS’s largest-ever recruitment campaign, with more than 2,200 applicants progressing through the recruitment process. Additional recruit intakes are also scheduled for July, October, and November.
The QPS is also ramping up its interstate recruitment drive with a State of Origin-themed campaign and will host Open Days in Brisbane and Townsville to showcase career opportunities in policing.
Police Minister Mark Ryan praised the new officers, saying their diverse expertise would strengthen the communities they serve. Commissioner Steve Gollschewski welcomed the recruits, acknowledging their skills and commitment to keeping Queenslanders safe.
