New Night Life Economy Commissioner to Boost Nighttime Economy
Premier Steven Miles has announced the creation of a new Night Life Economy Commissioner to support and enhance Queensland’s nighttime economy.
Premier Steven Miles has announced the creation of a new Night Life Economy Commissioner to support and enhance Queensland’s nighttime economy. The newly appointed commissioner will work closely with local businesses, live music venues, and entertainment precincts across the state, including Brisbane, Cairns, Toowoomba, and the Sunshine Coast, to foster a safe and thriving nightlife environment.
The role, which will be backed by funding in the upcoming State Budget, aims to support, promote, and advocate for key aspects of Queensland’s nightlife sector, ensuring its growth, sustainability, and vibrancy. The commissioner will facilitate partnerships across industries to strengthen the sector and improve the economic impact of local businesses, arts, entertainment, and tourism.
Premier Miles emphasised the importance of the nighttime economy in supporting jobs and generating significant revenue across the state. “I know small businesses are doing it tough, particularly in the arts and live music venues, which are the lifeblood of precincts and communities across Queensland,” said Premier Miles. “Our nighttime economy generates millions of dollars each year, and it’s time we enhanced that with the support of this new commissioner.”
The new commissioner will also focus on creating safer, more vibrant entertainment precincts while boosting the appeal of Queensland’s night-time offerings. “Forget Melbourne, forget Sydney, we want our young people and emerging artists right here in Queensland, enjoying a vibrant, world-class nightlife,” Premier Miles added.
Minister for Small Business Lance McCallum welcomed the announcement, highlighting the success of Queensland’s nightlife scene on the national and international stage. He pointed to the impact of NSW’s former restrictions on Sydney’s nightlife, stressing that only a plan led by the Labor government could keep Queensland’s nightlife dynamic and prosperous.
The appointment is expected to drive more visitors, create jobs, and boost economic activity in Queensland’s diverse communities.
