Miles Government to amend koala habitat protection regulations

The Miles Government has released the findings of a review into the koala habitat protection regulations introduced in 2020, which aimed to safeguard the koala population in South East Queensland.

The Miles Government has released the findings of a review into the koala habitat protection regulations introduced in 2020, which aimed to safeguard the koala population in South East Queensland. The review, conducted by the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation, included consultation with the conservation and urban development sectors, as well as the broader Queensland community.

While the review confirmed that the regulations had been effective in providing increased protection for koala habitat, some issues were identified. These included a lack of comprehensive data on habitat clearing, misinterpretation of the regulations leading to unintended clearing, and unnecessary delays and costs in preparing development applications.

In response, the government will introduce improvements to the regulations, including the creation of a new web-based notification system for habitat interference. This will enable better tracking of habitat clearing and provide more accurate data. Additionally, guidance material will be developed to clarify the regulations and reduce delays for landholders seeking development approval.

The regulatory changes will be implemented through amendments to the Planning Regulation 2017 and the Nature Conservation (Koala) Conservation Plan 2017. These changes aim to streamline the process, providing greater certainty to developers and property owners while continuing to protect koala habitats.

Environment Minister Leanne Linard acknowledged the challenges posed by South East Queensland’s growing population and the demand for land supply. She emphasised the importance of balancing conservation efforts with the region’s development needs to ensure the long-term protection of koalas and their habitat.
