Lockyer Valley Prison Nears Completion with Safety Upgrades

Queensland’s newest prison, the Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre, is set to receive a $25 million boost to improve safety, security, and rehabilitation efforts.

Queensland’s newest prison, the Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre, is set to receive a $25 million boost to improve safety, security, and rehabilitation efforts. Corrective Services Minister Nikki Boyd toured the construction site, confirming the facility remains on track for completion by the end of the year.

The additional funding will enhance security measures, including drone detection technology, and expand industry spaces to support prisoner rehabilitation. This brings the total cost of the project to $885 million, with an additional $4.6 million allocated for potential cost increases.

With all 40 buildings in place and internal fit-outs underway, the 1,536-bed centre will operate under a rehabilitation-focused model, offering health services and programs on site. Recruitment for over 800 staff—including custodial officers, psychologists, and education workers—is ongoing, with new officers graduating from training each week.

Commissioner Paul Stewart encouraged those interested in community safety careers to explore opportunities at the facility. Prisoners are expected to be received at the centre in late 2024 or early 2025.
