Judges appointed to District Court
Two senior Queensland legal figures have been appointed as judges of the District Court of Queensland, effective Monday 26 August 2024.
Two senior Queensland legal figures have been appointed as judges of the District Court of Queensland, effective Monday 26 August 2024. Southport-based Magistrate Dzenita Balic and current Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Philip McCarthy KC will begin their formal appointments next month.
Mr McCarthy KC, who was first called to the Bar in 1997, has had an extensive legal career, serving as Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions since 2021. He has appeared as lead counsel in numerous high-profile criminal trials, including homicides and complex frauds.
Magistrate Balic began her career as a legal support officer and was called to the Bar in 2006. She has prosecuted over 150 criminal trials and is known for her work in domestic and family violence courts.
Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath congratulated both appointees, stating, “Their appointments are a reflection of their considerable expertise in, and passion for, the law and justice in Queensland.”
