Hamish’s badge of honour
Caboolture Junior Police Office, Hamish, celebrated his eighth birthday on January 15, almost two years to the date of being sworn into the Queensland Police Service (QPS).
Hamish recently celebrated his birthday at Caboolture station, where he joined his police colleagues to enjoy the day with cake, presents, and even the thrill of turning on the police car sirens.
Moreton Police shared their well wishes on social media, saying, "Wishing you all the best for your big day. Have a great party."
In January 2023, at just five years old, Hamish made his dream of becoming a police officer come true when he was sworn into the Queensland Police Service (QPS).
He was joined by his family and kindergarten classmates as he was issued his own police identification and certificate.
The ceremony was a special moment, with Hamish arriving by Police Vessel Casey Blain, being piped in by Police Pipes and Drums, and getting a firsthand look at police life.
He even had the chance to meet officers from various units, including the Dog Squad, PolAir, Highway Patrol, and the Mounted Unit.
Despite battling dyskeratosis congenita, a serious genetic disorder affecting his bone marrow and liver, Hamish showed incredible courage and determination to pursue his dream.
After discussing his passion for policing with Senior Constable Cameron Clancy of Burpengary Police, Hamish wrote a letter to former Commissioner Katarina Carroll requesting to be appointed as a member of the QPS.
The support for Hamish’s journey was overwhelming, and in preparation for his swearing-in, he received an official acceptance letter and police uniform.
Former Commissioner Carroll praised Hamish for his bravery, saying, "This bravery is a quality seen in our frontline police every day, and our organisation is made stronger with Hamish’s appointment."
Former Police Minister and current Member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan, also expressed his pride in being part of Hamish’s special day, stating, "Hamish, you have all the ingredients of a great officer; a passion to help others and courage." he said in 2023.
