Gabba upgrade plans progressing, but no reduction in seating capacity

The Miles Government has firmly ruled out any reduction in seating capacity at the Gabba or spending $1.1 billion on an upgrade.

The Miles Government has firmly ruled out any reduction in seating capacity at the Gabba or spending $1.1 billion on an upgrade. While discussions on necessary upgrades are currently underway, the government has stressed that these will be planned and assessed just like any other project, with no proposals yet received.

State Development and Infrastructure Minister Grace Grace reaffirmed that the Premier had made it clear that any upgrades must stay within the allocated budget. “We are going to put on a Games to be proud of, that leaves a lasting legacy in communities right across the state,” she said, highlighting the release of the first half-billion dollars of tenders for new and upgraded venues.

Grace also criticised the LNP’s proposal for a new stadium at Victoria Park, arguing that it would cost more than $3.4 billion in public funds, potentially eliminating much-needed green space. She warned that the plan would lead to the demolition of the Gabba, with its beloved stadium being lost forever.

The government’s focus remains on supporting Queenslanders with cost-of-living relief while ensuring that any necessary upgrades to the Gabba are managed responsibly and effectively.
