Futsal and soccer success for Lowood teen
LOWOOD State High School student Hanna Shearer continued a memorable year in futsal as she was in a title-winning Metropolitan West team at the Queensland Futsal Championships.
Hanna played as a flanker for Met West in the U14 girls division, as the championships took place at the Brisbane-based Nissan Arena from November 24 to 26.
Teams came from Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast, South Coast, Darling Downs and all over Brisbane.
Met West had a 5-1 win over Darling Downs, followed by an 11-1 win over Wide Bay, a 3-0 win over Met East, a 6-1 win over Met North, and 4-2 wins over Met East and South Coast.
Met West’s last round-robin match yielded a 3-0 loss to Sunshine Coast, before Hanna and her teammates turned things around and beat Sunshine Coast 3-1 in a semi-final.
The grand final against Met East was deadlocked at 2-all, before Met West won the penalty shootout amid plenty of nerves.
Being on the winning side was a relief for Hanna, after she and some of her teammates were in last year’s Met West U14 girls team which finished as runner-up.
“I felt very proud to have played Met West futsal both years and to bring home the win this year,” she said.
Hanna also represented Lowood State High School in the Australasian Champion of Champions, Chantelle Cramb Cup and Calvary Cup this year, and was in a title win in the Chantelle Cramb Cup.
The Chantelle Cramb Cup success was no small feat for Hanna, who was in the U19 girls team despite being in year 8.
Hanna nonetheless said state level was the highest standard of futsal she had played, “because it is the best in Queensland”.
Hanna was also in a soccer title win this year, as she was in the Queensland Lions team which won the U14 National Premier League grand final.
Hanna began playing soccer at the age of six, and began playing futsal about three years ago.
“I enjoy the fast pace of the (indoor) game compared to outdoor, and it’s a great way to work on ball control and touches,” she said.
Hanna said she hoped to continue playing in futsal competitions, and would trial for next year’s U15 Met West team.
