Forensic Biologist to Review Queensland’s DNA Testing Operations

The Queensland Government has appointed forensic biologist Dr Kirsty Wright to review the state’s DNA testing operations, following concerns over forensic testing failures under the previous administration.

The Queensland Government has appointed forensic biologist Dr Kirsty Wright to review the state’s DNA testing operations, following concerns over forensic testing failures under the previous administration.

Dr Wright, who played a key role in exposing significant shortcomings in DNA analysis that led to two Commissions of Inquiry, will assess the progress of ongoing reforms and review the handling of samples linked to historic cases.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Deb Frecklington said Dr Wright’s appointment was a critical step in restoring confidence in forensic services.

“Dr Wright is highly regarded in her field, with extensive experience in forensic science, national security, and disaster victim identification,” she said.

The 2022 inquiry led by Walter Sofronoff KC found that many DNA samples were either not tested or incorrectly deemed unsuitable for analysis. A subsequent 2023 inquiry by former Federal Court judge Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC identified flaws in automated extraction methods, which yielded significantly lower DNA levels than manual techniques.

Frecklington said the government was committed to addressing past failings.

“The hardworking staff at Forensic Science Queensland deserve the right resources and processes to ensure justice is served,” she said.

Dr Wright is expected to deliver her findings and recommendations to the government by mid-next year.
