Familes claim over 150,000 Fair Play vouchers

Queensland families have claimed more than 150,000 FairPlay vouchers since the scheme’s launch at 9am on 1 July 2024.

Queensland families have claimed more than 150,000 FairPlay vouchers since the scheme’s launch at 9am on 1 July 2024. Each voucher, valued at up to $200, is designed to help offset the rising costs of junior sports, ensuring that cost does not restrict access to organised sport and active recreation.

The program, which is part of the Queensland Government’s 10-year Activate! Queensland Strategy, now extends to every child aged between five and 17 years. An increase in available vouchers—from the original allocation to 200,000—includes a dedicated 50,000 for children whose primary carer holds a valid Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card. The recent State Budget allocated $33.5 million to FairPlay for the 2024–2025 financial year, boosting the total investment to $40 million.

Premier Steven Miles said the initiative reflects his government’s broader commitment to reducing living costs, alongside other measures such as discounts on electricity bills, car registration, and public transport fares. Sport Minister Michael Healy highlighted the strong community response and noted that the early uptake of vouchers signals a positive impact on participation in sports and active lifestyles.

In Cairns, local sports organisations are expecting an increase in participation. Sharon Massey-Chase, Programs Manager at the Cairns Netball Association, observed that the FairPlay programme has played a crucial role in enabling more children to engage in netball and other activities. She added that the expanded eligibility criteria would likely boost involvement among both girls and boys in the region.
