Disaster Assistance for South Queensland Bushfire-Affected Communities

The Albanese and Crisafulli governments have announced disaster recovery funding for Dirranbandi and Hebel following bushfires on 5 November 2024.

The Albanese and Crisafulli governments have announced disaster recovery funding for Dirranbandi and Hebel following bushfires on 5 November 2024.

Support is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), covering council clean-up efforts, evacuation support, service restoration, and individual assistance.

Balonne Shire Council will receive funding for firefighting operations, incident management, evacuation centres, and the reconstruction of essential public infrastructure.

Personal Hardship Assistance is also available for eligible residents, offering $180 per individual and up to $900 for families of five or more to help cover emergency expenses such as food, clothing, and medicine.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management Jenny McAllister said the funding would help communities recover.

“Joint support includes immediate financial assistance for affected residents and funding to help reconnect damaged properties,” she said.

“We are committed to helping Dirranbandi and Hebel recover and will continue working closely with the Queensland Government.”

Queensland Minister for Disaster Recovery Ann Leahy praised the response efforts.

“From battling the blaze to evacuating residents, the response in Dirranbandi and Hebel has been lifesaving,” she said.

“Queensland’s remote communities are resilient, but disasters test that resolve. This assistance will help residents recover and support council efforts.”

Residents can contact the Queensland Community Recovery Hotline on 1800 173 349 or visit www.qld.gov.au/disasterhelp for more information.
