Twelve local councils including Moreton Bay, Somerset and Sunshine Coast will receive disaster assistance as the region braces for the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Twelve local councils including Moreton Bay, Somerset and Sunshine Coast will receive disaster assistance as the region braces for the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
The joint Commonwealth-state support, provided under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), will help fund counter-disaster operations, emergency repairs, and the reconstruction of essential public assets.
The local government areas covered include Brisbane, Fraser Coast, Gold Coast, Gympie, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, Noosa, Redland, Scenic Rim, Somerset, and Sunshine Coast.
The funding will assist councils in sandbagging efforts, evacuation preparations, debris removal, and urgent road repairs.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management Jenny McAllister said local governments played a crucial role in preparing for and recovering from disasters.
“Local infrastructure is vital to keeping communities connected and safe,” Ms McAllister said.
“This assistance will support councils as they prepare for Cyclone Alfred, including sandbagging operations and evacuations if necessary.”
She said the federal government was working closely with the Queensland Government and local councils to respond to the event.
“Our message to the community is clear: know your local risk, have a plan, and prepare your home now.”
Queensland Minister for Disaster Recovery Ann Leahy said ensuring public safety was the state government’s top priority.
“We’re prepared for Cyclone Alfred, and we’re asking Queenslanders to do the same,” Ms Leahy said.
“There will be no daylight between the event and our recovery. We have resources on the ground, ready to go as soon as Cyclone Alfred passes.”
