Countdown on to cheapest ever public fares
The countdown has begun for Queensland’s lowest-ever public transport fares, with just 50 days remaining until the introduction of 50-cent flat fares across the state.
The countdown has begun for Queensland’s lowest-ever public transport fares, with just 50 days remaining until the introduction of 50-cent flat fares across the state.
From Monday, August 5, the Miles Government will trial 50-cent fares on all Translink services for six months. This includes buses, trains, ferries, trams, and on-demand services in South East Queensland, as well as regional urban buses across the state. In addition, Airtrain services will be reduced to half price, cutting fares to $10.95 for travel between the city and Brisbane Airport.
The government aims to boost public transport usage, which remains approximately 13 per cent below pre-COVID levels. Translink will monitor service data throughout the trial to assess the impact on travel patterns and inform future decisions regarding fare structures and service levels.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish highlighted the benefits for Queenslanders, stating, “This trial will save people money on their daily commute, with some potentially saving over $100 a week. It’s also crucial that passengers continue to tap on and off, providing Translink with valuable data on service demand and helping to plan for a more efficient public transport network.”
The 50-cent fares extend across all Translink networks in South East Queensland, including Brisbane River ferries, Gold Coast trams, and the Southern Moreton Bay Island ferry services. Airtrain’s worker tickets will also be halved, with the Weekly Worker Ticket reducing from $43 to $21.50.
Public transport users are encouraged to check Translink’s Service Capacity Tracker for forecasts on service availability and visit the Translink website for further information.
