Consultation open for aquaculture strategy
Public consultation is now open for the Queensland Aquaculture Strategy 2024-2034, offering Queenslanders the opportunity to shape the future of this growing industry.
Public consultation is now open for the Queensland Aquaculture Strategy 2024-2034, offering Queenslanders the opportunity to shape the future of this growing industry. The strategy aims to reinforce Queensland’s reputation as Australia’s leading supplier of high-quality farmed seafood, an industry currently valued at $263 million.
The initiative is part of a $15 million commitment under the Future Fishing Taskforce’s recommendations, which seek to reduce high-risk fishing activities affecting the Great Barrier Reef. The Queensland and Australian Governments have jointly committed $185 million to implementing all taskforce recommendations.
Aquaculture plays a crucial role in meeting increasing consumer demand for premium seafood while complementing wild-caught fisheries. The strategy will outline research priorities, best practice regulations, and a long-term vision for the industry, supporting regional jobs and economic growth. It will also drive innovation and investment to ensure Queensland remains a global leader in sustainable aquaculture.
Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Minister Mark Furner said the government is committed to growing an industry that delivers investment and employment across the state, particularly in regional areas. He highlighted a recent report showing a 17% increase in aquaculture growth over 12 months, reaching a record $263 million.
The consultation paper is available at the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries website, and submissions close at 5pm on 31 July 2024.
