Construction for venues to be used in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games is moving forward with an industry briefing held today, attracting over 70 businesses. The first Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for tenders will be released on May 20.
Detailed assessments have been completed for the Chandler Sports Precinct and three Sunshine Coast venues, allowing the procurement process to commence. The Australian and Queensland governments have allocated funding from the $1.87 billion Minor Venues Program for these projects.
The briefing was attended by Queensland Minister for State Development and Infrastructure Grace Grace, Federal Senator Anthony Chisholm, Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli, Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee President Andrew Liveris, and local MPs. During the visit, it was announced that a $142 million indoor sports centre will be built at the Kawana Sports Precinct, with a $148 million upgrade to the adjacent Sunshine Coast Stadium. The Chandler Sports Precinct and Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Centre will also receive multimillion-dollar upgrades.
The Q2032 Procurement Strategy aims to prioritise local businesses, with at least 30% of procurement coming from Queensland SMEs. Over 1,000 jobs are expected to be created, with the first contracts due to be awarded later this year. Early works on the Sunshine Coast Stadium are set to begin in late 2024, with other projects commencing in 2025.
A quarter of the $1.87 billion Minor Venues Program will be out for tender in the coming months, with further projects due for release by the end of 2024. The Queensland and Australian governments have also committed to ensuring that 10-15% of project hours are worked by apprentices or trainees.
Communities across Queensland will benefit from the Games, with events to be held in cities including Cairns, Townsville, Logan, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Redlands, and the Gold Coast.
