KENDALL Morton has won back Caloundra for the LNP, while Glass House MP Andrew Powell has been re-elected for a sixth term following the conservative party’s decisive victory at the 2024 state election.
Both MPs said they were humbled by the result, adding that improving infrastructure will be a key policy priority for both electorates. David Crisafulli, was officially sworn in as premier on Monday morning vowing to legislate his key crime policy within weeks.
While counting is still underway the LNP has won 48 of the 47 seats needed to govern, with 10 seats in doubt. Ms Morton defeated Labor’s Jason Hunt with a 5 per cent swing. Mr Hunt had held the seat by 2.5 per cent.
She said it was an honour to be elected:
“It’s a great thing that women get the opportunity to be in politics, and it’s an amazing opportunity for anyone to be able to do this and hopefully it will be something for other women to aspire to,” Ms Morton said.
Mr Powell, who held Glass House by just 1.6 per cent, recorded a 9.1 per cent swing to him following a quiet campaign by Labor.
Former Glasshouse Christian College student, Ariana Doolan, is on track to take the seat of Pumicestone. While still too early to call, Ms Doolan was leading Monday morning. A victory to the LNP candidate would make her the youngest ever female member of parliament.
