Autism in Kilcoy
Kilcoy is set to have a free one-day Autism Workshop for parents, grandparents and carers, following the Federal Government’s launch of Australia’s first National Autism Strategy and an associated Action Plan last week.
The Autism Workshop will take place on February 13, from 9:15 am to 2:45 pm, at the Kilcoy Visitor Information Centre. It will offer an opportunity for local families to join together and learn more about autism, as well as ways to strengthen the partnership with schools.
Attendees will learn about the diversity of autism by examining parents' knowledge of autism and how it directly impacts their child at home and school. The workshop will also investigate a range of practical strategies to use at home and school to improve learning outcomes, while understanding sensory processing.
This will explore sensory processing and the unique differences autistic individuals may have with processing information from their senses. It will also share strategies to assist people in coping with sensory input and meeting their sensory needs.
The workshop will examine ways for parents to strengthen partnerships between home, school, and community, increasing awareness of support and services for families, and how they can be accessed. Lastly, it will explore ways parents can advocate more effectively for their child’s needs and help them develop a plan for moving forward.
The State’s first National Autism Strategy and its associated Action Plan will drive a coordinated national approach to breaking down barriers to inclusion and improving the evidence, understanding, and acceptance of autism. It will also ensure autistic people across Australia have access to equal opportunities and the support they need to thrive.
The Strategy was developed with extensive consultation with autistic people, their families and carers, and the broader autism and disability sectors, researchers, and experts.
The Strategy and Action Plan focuses on four key outcome areas:
Social inclusion
Economic inclusion
Diagnosis, services, and supports
Health and mental health
