A new wave of learning

Queensland Childcare Services (QCCS) is redefining early learning through its unique Beach Kindy program, encouraging children to use nature’s resources to learn, while exploring the environment around them.

Morayfield Early Childhood Centre has been running its Beach Kindy program for several years.

This program takes children aged five and six to Banksia Beach on Bribie Island every fortnight during warmer months and once a month in winter.

Centre Director Jayme Marshall emphasized the "very positive" feedback from children, parents, educators, and the community.

She noted that the beach setting aligns with their “learning for life” philosophy, enhancing children’s physical, language, social, and cognitive skills.

“Not only is it a fun and exciting experience for the children, but the beach and coastline setting also provide endless opportunities for learning,” Marshall said.

She highlighted how nature play stimulates children’s immune systems, boosts physical activity, fuels imagination, and improves language skills.

“When children see beauty in nature, they learn to respect the world around them,” Marshall added, mentioning that children who play in natural surroundings are often more resilient to stress, exhibit fewer behavioral issues, and have higher self-worth.

Ms. Marshall noted a sense of calm among the children after these outings, which helps them develop a positive self-concept, manage emotions, and interact well with peers.

“We hope to inspire other educational facilities to adopt similar programs,” she said.

For the young participants, it’s both educational and memorable.

Student Henry enjoys observing crabs, while Emma shared that she learned about "blue things on the sand" that shouldn’t be touched because they might be harmful.
